As a I believe that a first-class, progressive public school system is not the special interest of school-aged children and their parents, but it is in everyone’s interest to support our local schools. I also believe that a dedicated School Board Member should be an active member of our community, listening, learning, and acting upon our citizens’ concerns. I graduated from the College of William and Mary with a BA degree in Government, and I have been immersed in the activities of our city government and public schools for more than 26 years. My past eight year of School Board experience and my extensive leadership positions have prepared me with the vision, knowledge, education and commitment to continue to serve our Manassas City Public Schools.
I am very proud of my many accomplishments as a member of the Manassas City School Board these past eight years. We have remained committed to success for all students as we support first-class schools for a first-class city. We have developed partnerships with local businesses, bringing exciting opportunities to all of our classrooms. We are one of the 100 Best Communities for Music Education, thanks to the comprehensive fine arts programs embedded in all of our schools. We established our All Day Kindergarten Program and increased Osbourn’s Advanced Placement and dual-enrollment programs with George Mason University and Northern Virginia Community College. We support Career and Technical Education in encouraging every student to reach his/her full potential in our ever-changing world. We are building new facilities while maintaining strong fiscal management. Manassas City Public Schools is truly a center of excellence, innovation and hope.
Issues:
- Continuing the drive for excellence in Manassas City schools – We need to maintain our expectation that every child graduating from our schools is prepared for the next level of education, regardless of educational needs, race, religion or socioeconomic status.
- Maintaining a competitive salary and benefits plan to retain the best classroom teachers and staff – Our entire MCPS staff is important to our students’ successes and we need to support everyone in salaries, benefits and professional development, during good or not-so-good economic times.
- Remaining committed to upgrading our facilities – All of our students and staff deserve the best schools and programs that we can provide while maintaining strong fiscal management. Mayfield Intermediate has proved to be an exceptional new school, and Baldwin Elementary is due to be replaced.
- Listening to what the community is saying about our schools – Communication is all-important, including all of our City of Manassas citizens, whether they have students in our schools, whether they own businesses or whether they are seniors enjoying all that Manassas offers.
- Ensuring safe and secure schools – All of our staff and students deserve to feel safe in our buildings, and parents deserve to feel confident that their children receive the best care during the school day and in after-school activities.
Particular Issue:
I believe that BALANCE is the key to our diverse school district’s success, whether it is strengthening our curriculum and instruction, enhancing our fine and performing arts, supporting our state-of-the-art technology plan, maintaining our quality facilities, or managing our needs-based budget with fiscal responsibility. I believe that the citizens of the City of Manassas deserve “first-class schools for a first-class city.”
